Montecristo No. 4

As stated in the introduction, this is by far the world’s best selling cigar and chances are your first Cuban cigar is likely to be this powerful little fellow. It’s 42 ring gauge means that it will inevitably be thick and robust whilst the 5-inch length provides for a comfortable 30 – 45 minute smoke.

Fresh out of the box, this cigar has a strong woody undertone combined with a strong earthy flavour. There is hardly any subtlety but that isn’t what one looks for in this particular smoke. The taste can be described as sharp and acidic on the palette, much like a young cabernet-sauvignon that should have been aged. Whilst retaining the classic Cuban taste and leafy bouquet, it has little corresponding undertones unless aged.

Owing to the fact that this cigar is relatively affordable and easily found, it can be considered more of a staple than a luxury.

A good glass of 12yr old scotch is a necessary part of the experience, single-malt or mixed-blend entirely up to the consumer.
